The Israeli hydrogen sector is an emerging and innovative domain which covers the entire hydrogen value chain (production, storage, transportation) with off takers in the mobility and industry sectors.
- Production – several startups develop innovative green H2 production technology. CCUS technologies are being developed too to facilitate blue H2 production.
- Storage – innovative storage startups develop technologies that are employed at international seaports and as part of funded Horizon Europe projects. Physical storage solutions are under development too.
- Transportation – Israel’s natural gas infrastructure can transfer H2 (and CO2) in its pipelines.
- Off-takers
- Mobility – Israel’s first H2 refuelling station (HRS) was inaugurated in 2023 and it fuels three H2 trucks.
- Industry – pilot studies are on their way to test industrial processes with blends of H2 and natural gas.
National policy
Israel has developed its national hydrogen strategy (PDF, English / Hebrew), and has recently published an RFI for hydrogen valleys, which was addressed, among others by IBEX. Regulation is an important factor which was successfully addressed for the HRS.
International cooperation is key to the success of Israel’s hydrogen economy. This includes
- engagement at international conferences (i.e., World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam)
- development of international R&D projects
- contribution to the global climate objectives
- organization of international delegations
- scouting for technology and development of pilot projects
Funding of hydrogen can be achieved via international funded projects, such as Clean Hydrogen Europe, Horizon Europe, BIRD energy projects. As a Startup Nation, IL’s plethora of innovative hydrogen startups can attract international investment and venture capital.
Crossovers and interdisciplinary sectors, such as Israel’s AI and cybersecurity can be attracted to its H2 sector.
